Millionaire quiz in film makeover
Trainspotting director Danny Boyle is to base his forthcoming movie on the Indian version of hit TV quiz show Who Wants to Be A Millionaire?
Based on a true story, Slumdog Millionaire, will shoot in Mumbai from a script by fellow Briton Simon Beaufoy, who penned The Full Monty.
It centres on an illiterate street boy who enters the show to track down his lost girlfriend - but ends up winning.
The Beach director Boyle called it a love story. Filming begins in November.
The Indian version of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? (Kaun Baneg Crorepati?) was previously hosted by Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan. Fellow film star Shah Rukh Khan took over earlier this year.
The British quiz show launched in 1998 and has aired in more than 100 countries.
‘Cheating’
Slumdog Millionaire is based on Q&A, the best-selling debut novel from author Vikas Swarup - a career diplomat who has spent 18 years in India’s foreign ministry.
The novel recounts the story of teenager Ram Mohammad Thomas, to be played by Skins star Dev Patel - according to trade paper Variety.
Thomas wins the jackpot on the quiz show, but producers have him arrested for cheating.
No release dates have been scheduled for the film, which is backed by Film Four and Celador - the original production company behind the hit quiz show.
